Case Study

Wharton Platform Strategy Simulation

Wharton needed to modernize their classroom pricing simulation. Lincoln Loop developed a modern Django web application that reimagined the user experience.

Background

Wharton designs advanced learning tools that blend theoretical knowledge with practical application. Their Platform Strategy Simulation (PSS) is an in-classroom game that provides students with an interactive experience for understanding pricing models and strategic decision-making within platform-based ecosystems.

Challenge

The original PSS application was developed on a proprietary low-code platform, presenting numerous challenges, including:

  • Proprietary Platform Limitations: Restricted customization and scalability stifled the app’s potential.
  • Outdated User Interface: The interface relied on static tables, failing to engage students and communicate learnings effectively.
  • Inefficient Classroom Integration: Educators had to supplement the app with external tools, complicating workflows.
  • Lack of Real-Time Feedback: There was no insight into which teams had joined, submitted pricing, or were online, leaving instructors without crucial information for smooth lesson facilitation.

Wharton turned to Lincoln Loop to reimagine the app, emphasizing scalability, usability, and modern design as areas of opportunity.

Solution

Lincoln Loop reimagined the Platform Strategy Simulation through a combination of technical expertise and creative design. The app was migrated to a scalable Django framework, ensuring future adaptability through a modular and maintainable codebase.

To improve the user experience, static data tables were replaced with dynamic, interactive components, enhancing the app’s usability and engagement. The new UI balances gamification with academic integrity, effectively communicating the lesson's core objectives while keeping students engaged. Real-time feedback within the UI enables efficient classroom management, providing insights into team activity and streamlining educator workflows.

Additionally, close collaboration with stakeholders allowed the solution to evolve and surpass initial expectations as opportunities for quick wins and value-add were seized. For example, a “bonus round” feature eliminated the need for the professor to supplement the app with external tools.

The Right Fit for the Job

Our history of successful collaborations with Wharton set us up to approach this project with confidence and efficiency. By integrating advanced Django development with thoughtful UX/UI design, we were poised to deliver a comprehensive solution tailored to Wharton’s unique needs. Wharton's experience with our communicative, adaptable approach fostered a strong partnership that would result in exceeding expectations.
